Upcoming challenges !
Now that the national school races are over, its time we think outside the box and venture further.
Hey cheetah cubs, its now the month of May and your honeymoon period is over. Your first 100 days in Commonwealth Secondary School has been nothing short of sweet and easy. You have had it cozy. You have been shielded so far. No penalty has been imposed on you yet.
Now its time to grow up. You need to shed those baby fats. By now you should flex your muscles and you need to do it fast. So, here's the deal. If you have not broken the 5 km limit yet, then you better do so during the June hols. From here onwards, its 10 km and nothing less. Sound scary? Well not actually. Its been done by your seniors before and they are none the worse.
Here are some of the upcoming events that you may want to think about.
Passion Run - 5km or 10 km
Saffra Bay Singapore Bay Run - 16 Aug 09 (Sun
- Fun Run - 5 km ($12)
- 10 km run - 10 km (early bird by end may 09 - $26 - Normal - $30)
Mizuno Wave Run - 13th Sep
New Balance Real Run - 10 km
Solomon Train - 8th Nov
Standard Chartered 2009 - 10 km
How can we fund the registration fees...Hmmm...lets get creative, shall we?
Think of a way how we can do this without getting into your parents' deep pockets. Now that would be a bigger challenge for some of you.

We came...so did the rain..and many things did happened in between..
Alas !We did not run as we had planned and strangely enough there was no re-run...or was there one which we did not know of?
We came late because our bus broke down. Along with it our spirit went down too as seconds turned to precious minutes. There was simply nothing anyone could do to mend the damage. One cheetah cried out of desperation and disappointment for missing his run.
They came expecting to sweat it out. Was this a missed opportunity? Would this race make any difference from other races? Perhaps it might be for one cheetah... No one knows for sure...

Hurray, Jian got 5th in this one.
He came in huffing and puffing like an overheated engine. He was all smiles and could not contain his excitement. His singlet was off and he was all sweaty.
I looked up wondering what's the big deal. Well, for him it was. He had just managed to beat some of the better runners. That was really encouraging....So this was the beginning of good things to come.
For the rest of the Cheetahs, it was enough to share the happiness of big brother.

This was one of the most exciting runs for us. I remember the emotions...Seems everything was right for us. Jun Jian could not contain himself...He could smell victory as the run progress... JH and his teammates were confident. The weather was just great. In short, the Cheetahs were ready to take a kill.
Finally the result was out.
The U17 MEN (ya..were boys and now MEN)were CHAMPIONS !!!
The U15 Boys... came in 3rd.
This was too much to take...I had amnesia after that (post competition trauma)

Whats in a name?
=========================
Over one weekend, I was musing over a nice name for the team that would succintly describe my admiration for my cross country team. Ok...so they are not THE BEST yet...But as they say...THE BEST IS YET TO BE...and since Commonwealthians are champions in the making...the best can therefore be expected from each one of them.
So after googling for the fastest land creature on land...the list came up as follows:
Cheetah (at the top of the list) ...and Bingo...that just click.
I love cats and BIG CATS are Beautiful... graceful....fast.
Grace is also one of the quality I have observed in some of the CSSRunners as they ran....so that's just perfect for me...
Then...Wham...they don't like the name...Well actually, its just this one particular cheetah with an ATTITUDE. In fact, he was embarassed by it...
"What if...." He asked me quietly, "we win...R they going to call us CSS Cheetah?" I replied" Of course lah... Cheetah is Ok what?" Somewhat ruffled by his lack of enthusiasm.
Lucky for him, I am in control of my emotions. Else, he would have been shredded to pieces. [Secretly though, I am pleased with him. He has a winning streak and a winner's thoughts]
And Guess what? I'm waiting for this punk Kitty to graduate at end of 2009 so I can totally brainwash the other junior kitties into submission to accept their chosen names without question...just a thought....PURRRRR....
I like this cheetah picture. It shows grace, power, speed, focus...

2009 came with all the promises that things could be better or worse. We look forward to witness events that would hopefully change our destiny in ways that would be beneficial to us all.
For a start, at CSS, the first event of the year came in the form of CCA orientation on 3rd Jan 09. All CCA groups, were geared up to market their activities to the new sec 1 intake.

Md Danish B Mohd Sec 1-7
Vijay Hari Sudan Sec 1-3
Md Salishin B Sazali Sec 1-7

Standard Chartered Marathon 2008
=================================
Training had begun right after exam and continued after the Real run and into the holidays. Attendance was not 100% but the regulars are all that...regular in their training.
7th Dec came. As usual we all met at Jurong East MRT to board our chartered bus. This time we included our graduating students. With Jackie and company in the midst, the atmosphere is a bit more noisy and celebratory. They sure know how to pitch up the mood.

I also had with me, Ms Heriza, a trainee teacher to assist with photo taking.
Here's the list of the participants.
Teng Jian Hong
Faiz Anis
Zhi Han
Yap Yun Han
Hong Hwee
Jackie
Zhong Han
Maxwell
Kenn Siang was inadvertantly omitted during the registration. I didn't know how it happenned and was truly sorry. Especially when he had diligently put in a lot of practice time. Kenn came anyway, to cheer his friends along. Well... actually, he and Masaki who was also not in the list came and played with their PSB all through out the race. So much for the cheering.
As you can see, the sec 1 runners and Farhana was not in the list. They could only sign up for the kid's dash which was deemed too easy for them at the point of registration. I didn't signed them up and lived to regret this since they had put in a lot of training time. Withand nothing to look forward to, training becomes somewhat pointless other than to maintain their fitness. There would be no other races for them till 2009.
After the race, which all the boys completed, we met some of the ex-students of Commonwealthians. They joined our group and chatted with us. I wished I had my camera to take a group photo of them together. It is not often that you meet ex-students in any event, not with all the people together.
I didn't particularly felt well that day. And although the mood was high for all the participants, mine was at an all time low. All I wanted to do was to go home and have a good rest. It was after all a Sunday. I did admire all the participants for their commitment to their health, though. And so...I made this my new year resolution. To put in running time for the year 2009.....as often as I possibly could.
Cheers to 2009.
P.S: The pictures taken from Ms. Heriza's camera is not very impressive but will do for this post.

New Balance Real Run 19 Oct 2008
================================================
We arrived at the hall quite early. Yet there were already throngs of people all set to run the race....very enthusiatic lot they were. My students were rather quiet and subdued. We had met very early and boarded our chartered bus at Jurong MRT. Most of them were not in form. All were sleepy including myself. They had just finished their EOY exams. I wonder whether they could finish the race.... These are the students that participated in the real run.
1200 Chua Zhi Han (Men Youth 15 km)
1201 Nur Farhana (Women Open 10 km)
1202 Teng Jian Hong (Men YOuth 15 km)
1203 Faiz (Men Youth 15 km)

1207 Leng Kenn Siang (Men Youth 15 km)
1208 Yeo Jun Hian (Men Youth 15 km)
1209 Kuah Kai Xiang (Absent)
Faiz and Farhana had just celebrated the the Eid Fitri and therefore had fasted for whole month of Ramadhan. Silently I had hoped that they had all done their personal training during the exam period. I only saw Faiz at the gym regularly.
And so the day has come and all shall be revealed.
Only Faiz finished at 15th position in the Men Youth category at 15 km. The rest had given their best and finished the race. In the end we do have something to celebrate about.... :). One thing for sure, in future, I will insist that they put in an hour run...exam or no exam.
We had taken nice pictures of the event using my super duper new Sony camera purchased at cheap price at the Esso gas station....of Faiz and his prized trophy, of the boys eating the bananas and sipping 100 plus, of Farhana with her consolation smile, of the celebratory mood of the participants....Alas I have lost it all. The camera and all the priceless images went missing at Club Med Bintan. Nothing was more painful than losing your memory....
